Rep. Gary Miller Announces 2013 Priorities during Loma Linda University Visit: Pledges to Fight for Inland Empire Job Growth, Improved Education, Strengthened Public Safety

After touring the Loma Linda University and Loma Linda University Medical Center this morning with University President Dr. Richard Hart, Dean of Medicine Dr. Roger Hadley and University Senior Vice President for Advancement Rachelle Bussell, Congressman Miller released the following statement:

"I am glad that I had the opportunity to meet with the leaders of this fine university. It is a true gem here in the 31st District, providing students with a quality, first-class education, and supporting thousands of jobs here in the Inland Empire," said Congressman Miller outside the region's landmark teaching hospital, which supplies 15,000 jobs to our region.

"In the numerous meetings I have had with constituents from across the 31st Congressional District, one thing is clear: the Inland Empire is still struggling," continued Congressman Miller. "With unemployment still above ten percent, it is important that we get our region, where I started my business 40 years ago and where so many families have been prosperous in the past, growing again. In Congress, my focus is simple: finding the solutions that the moms, dads, kids, seniors, veterans and all of our neighbors here in the 31st demand: restoring job growth, improving our region's schools, and strengthening public safety. Our families, senior citizens and veterans deserve it."

The Congressman also addressed the need for a rededication to our struggling educational system. In addition to Loma Linda Medical University, the 31st District is also home to the University of Redlands, California State University, San Bernardino and many students who attend the University of California, Riverside.

"We must do what is necessary to give our children the opportunity to succeed," noted Congressman Miller. "This will require an all-inclusive approach to our region's K-12, universities and vocational training schools. When I served as the Chairman of the Budget Committee in the State Assembly, we established a budget surplus with a K-12 class size reduction, so I know with some old-fashioned hard work we can find solutions in Congress that both create fiscal responsibility and the best education in the world."

Lastly, the Congressman put an emphasis on the need for safer schools.

"I have spoken with local law enforcement about how the horrors of gang activity, drug trafficking, human trafficking and other illegal behavior has a devastating effect on our families and our children. In the coming weeks, I will be launching a Public Safety Advisory Committee here in the Inland Empire to tackle these critical problems and find the legislative solutions we need," said Congressman Miller.

Congressman Miller proudly represents the cities of Redlands, Grand Terrace, Loma Linda, San Bernardino, Fontana, Rialto, Colton, Upland and Rancho Cucamonga.
